👋 Hi! Tell us about yourself and your training

Hi, I am Caio Tamura, 33 yrs old from Brazil. I have been living in Sydney, Australia for 10 yrs.

I am a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black belt first degree, under professor Thiago Braga. I live and breathe Jiu Jitsu, it’s my Job and what I choose to do for life.

I am an instructor at Legacy Brazilian Jiu Jitsu located in Chippendale, Sydney. Multiple times Australian and Pan Pacific Champion and some other competitions as IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation) and AJP Continental Pro.

I have been practicing BJJ since 2006 and black belt since 2014, I started training because of a friend and since then never stopped, BJJ gets you addicted.

Back in the days I used to play indoor soccer Futsal, Skateboard and Surf. Nowadays my only hobby is surfing that helps me to relax my body muscles.

I am lucky enough to have some support from MyoRecovery co. to help with my injuries and Fighter’s Performance to help with my strength and conditional.

⏱ Describe a typical day of training

In between training whenever there are waves, I surf as well.

My normal routine involves at least one training session a day Monday to Friday. Monday and Wednesday normally are my hard-core sessions where I train twice and is always intense. This is just my normal week.

Competition season is when things get a bit more intense and we add competition training adding long rounds, specific training, cardio, endurance, resistance, isometric, mindset, strategies/plans and also, it’s really important to load your body with the right food for you.

Every single person works differently so it’s really important to know your body and what type of food helps you to perform better.

My training routine remains basically the same, but I try to add 2x a week Strength and conditional functional training specific for Fighter’s Performance (Mark Brewer’s Fighters Performance).

Week competition plan:

  • Monday: 2x Jiu jitsu training
  • Tuesday: 1x Strength and conditional functional training, 1x Jiu jitsu
  • Wednesday: 2x Jiu Jitsu training
  • Thursday: 1x Strength and conditional functional training, 1x Jiu jitsu
  • Friday: 1x Jiu jitsu

Sessions duration 1,5hr Jiu jitsu, 1hr Strength and conditional functional training.

In between training whenever there are waves, I surf as well. That keeps me willing and ready to train.

To keep me going my supplementation is: Magnesium, Glucosamine, Multi-vitamin, Collagen and Amino-acids (X-tend brand) during training.

👊 How do you keep going and push harder?

Life is always about challenges and challenges make you push yourself.

Always remember to set up goals for sure one of the biggest factors that will drive and push you harder.

In the Jiu jitsu environment your training partners and teammates will help you to push yourself hard and be successful. Jiu Jitsu is a challenge game in which you always find yourself under pressure/difficult circumstances that make you make fast decisions, some of which will help you to be taken for life.

Life is always about challenges and challenges make you push yourself.

Working with what you love to do is priceless. I am lucky to be the guy that helps change people’s lives as a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Professor.

Thinking of challenges I think the biggest challenge i’ve faced is the fear of failing but at the end you’ve got to learn that is ok to fail and take it as part of a learning process.

🏆 How are you doing today and what does the future look like?

During this pandemic I am trying to stay occupied doing a lot of solo drills work out specific to Jiu Jitsu.

Also, I like to cook/bake, so I am cooking and baking a lot. Experimenting a lot of recipes.

Looking forward to when it ended because I am always looking forward to competing internationally. Traveling as well as competing is the best.

I am also working on the business to build a strong and solid team.

I do what I love, but if I could start over I would probably start my journey younger.

🤕 How do you recover, rest and handle injuries?

As you get older you learn your limitations and understand your body. If my body asks for rest, I take it easier on the training or even take the day to rest.

I also have the support from MyoRecovery co. to help with my injuries and prevention.

I do not sleep much during the week. It’s somewhere around 5-6 hours but whenever I can I try to stay in bed for at least 8 hours.

🍎 How is your diet and what supplements do you use?

Sugar is a NO on my diet in competition season.

My diet is pretty simple, clean eating based on carbs, good fat, protein it will change a little when I am cutting weight which will be more like protein, less carbs and lots of salads.

Sugar is a NO on my diet in competition season. Sunday is my cheat day depending how big the competition is otherwise I take the weekend.

Coffee is my boost in the morning and after lunch. Alcohol is not my thing. I go out and have a social drink, but it does not fit in my training routine.

Social gatherings, I can handle being out on social occasions and not drink or just have water or tea.

👍 What has inspired and motivated you?

My parents and my professor are the ones that inspire the most. Of course, some big names in the sport especially those that came from nothing.

I try to read a lot about motivational history and success people as well as leadership.

Best advice: Never let anyone steal your dreams out of you, you have worked hard to deserve it.

✏️ Advice for other people who want to improve themselves?

Get yourself around people that want you to succeed.

I always tell my friends and others; you’ve got to find something that you want to do and feel good about. Be in an environment where you feel comfortable and motivated.

Get yourself around people that want you to succeed. You have to be the one initiating and do not give up in the first obstacle.

🤝 Are you taking on clients right now?

I am but it won’t be the same as usual. But I will make sure that the class will be appropriate to fulfill the person’s needs.

To hire me as a coach you have to keep in mind that you not only getting a better fitness level but you also getting knowledge. Some thing that you will take to rest of your life.

How long will take to the black belt. Jiu Jitsu is a long term training, results and improvement will come with patience.
